The Schlage 740 Series emergency break-glass release allows normally locked doors to release for emergency egress. It is available as a release-only unit (740), with LED indicator (741), or with audible signaling (742), wall-mounted over a standard three-gang enclosure, and includes four replacement lens disks.

Product specifications
Contact rating 6A @ 30 VDC, form Z switch
Switch type plunger-activated
Housing material stainless steel plate and fittings
Models 740 (standard), 741 (with LED), 742 (with 80 dB Sonalert horn)
Mount wall-mounted over standard three-gang enclosure
Low-voltage wiring Connection count needs review
PreparationChoose the exact 740 standard, 741 indicator or 742 audible variant and prepare its standard three-gang enclosure. The installation sheet allows surface or mortise mounting, while the current datasheet describes surface mounting; confirm the supplied assembly and matching mounting arrangement before cutting. Fit the release/indicator plate, hammer and chain, and the required signage. Match the selected locking system and notification variant before wiring.
ElectricalThe release uses screw-type wiring connections. Keep the selected fail-safe lock-control circuit distinct from the optional 741 indicator or 742 audible circuit. The installation sheet rates the switch contacts at 6 amps at 30 VAC, while the current datasheet lists 6A at 30 VDC; retain that AC/DC rating conflict and confirm the delivered switch rating before specifying a load. These are contact limits, not a power-supply requirement. The manufacturer gives separate wiring arrangements when lock and break-glass indicator/audible voltages differ. Select the exact variant and actual controlled circuit before specifying wiring; no field conductor count or cable run quantity is established here.

Conditional connectionsBreak glass switch contacts in series with the lock circuit (fail-safe lock control, with On/Off control): cable runs quantity unspecified; conductor count unspecified; wire type not documented; size unspecified; shielding unspecified; rating unspecified; endpoints 740 break glass switch screw terminals to lock circuit / input voltage / On/Off control; when Installation configuration is Base 740 standard release, Figure A typical wiring. Cable run count and conductor count are not documented.; Indicator light circuit powered from input voltage (same as lock voltage): cable runs quantity unspecified; conductor count unspecified; wire type not documented; size unspecified; shielding unspecified; rating unspecified; endpoints 741 LED indicator to input voltage; when Installation configuration is Optional accessory selected: IF the 741 variant (LED indicator) is selected, Figure B, with break glass operated at the same voltage as the lock. Not part of the base 740.; Audible (Sonalert horn) circuit powered from input voltage (same as lock voltage): cable runs quantity unspecified; conductor count unspecified; wire type not documented; size unspecified; shielding unspecified; rating unspecified; endpoints 742 audible horn to input voltage; when Installation configuration is Optional accessory selected: IF the 742 variant (audible horn) is selected, Figure C, with break glass operated at the same voltage as the lock. Not part of the base 740.; Separate break glass voltage supply for the indicator when it differs from the lock voltage: cable runs quantity unspecified; conductor count unspecified; wire type not documented; size unspecified; shielding unspecified; rating unspecified; endpoints indicator/audible device to break glass voltage source to lock voltage source; when Installation configuration is Optional accessory selected: IF an indicator variant (741/742) is selected AND the break glass voltage differs from the lock voltage, Figure D.
